Uncorking Insights: Key Takeaways from Wine Industry Experts

Last month, the Bay Cities team, along with industry leaders, innovators, and experts spent an impactful week in California’s Central Coast, to discuss the trends shaping the future of the wine and beverage industry. From shifting consumer preferences to the impact of digital transformation, these events provided a wealth of knowledge and insights. Here are some of the key takeaways:

  1. Changing Consumer Preferences & Beverage Trends
We're hearing it everywhere: Gen Z isn’t drinking wine as much as other generations. It turns out, however, that Zoomers are still drinking -- but not like previous generations have. That’s why Karen Daenen, Director of Research & Consumer Insights at Jackson Family Wines, encouraged wine brands to meet consumers where they’re at – literally. She advised companies to think about ways to introduce wine to new occasions and emphasized the need to have younger consumers begin to think of wine for fun and energetic times. Similarly, Kaleigh Theriault, Director of Thought Leadership, NIQ Beverage Alcohol Vertical stressed, “Wine needs to lean more into being for every occasion. It’s about communicating to the consumer that wine isn’t
just for dinner parties or hanging out with girlfriends; it can be a product for any time.”
  2. Sustainability as a Competitive Advantage
Sustainability remains a major focus, with increasing consumer demand for eco-friendly packaging and sustainable production practices. The industry is responding with innovations such as alternative packaging solutions, regenerative farming, and carbon footprint reduction initiatives. Brands that can authentically communicate their sustainability efforts will continue to gain favor with environmentally conscious consumers. In fact, Theriault says “Current wine label trends are around what’s better for consumers and better for the environment.” That’s why EcoVino, Bay Cities’ one-of-a-kind sustainable wine shipping product line is an ideal solution. Crafted from Bay Cities' recyclable corrugated cardboard and optional compostable foam, EcoVino delivers numerous advantages to wineries and environmentally-conscious consumers alike.

  3. Rise of Premiumization & Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) Sales

Many industry experts emphasized the ongoing premiumization of wine and spirits, with consumers showing a willingness to pay more for high-quality, unique, or limited edition products. This is especially true for the younger generations who value exclusivity and experience-driven purchases.

Additionally, the DTC model continues to be a game-changer, with wineries and beverage brands investing more in digital marketing, subscription models, and personalized experiences. The EcoVino Boutique Wine Program allows wineries to access premium, customized packaging at a lower cost, making it possible for even mid-tier and small wineries to give their customers the ultimate “unboxing experience.”

Whether it’s through cultural connections and nostalgia or by making it an “experience,” Theriault emphasized the importance of “trying different ways to engage with the consumer.”  Theriault also urged brands to tell their story, as that is one attribute that Gen Z values.

Putting a Cork in It

Last month’s gathering provided a roadmap for where the industry is headed. As consumer preferences evolve, technology advances, and sustainability takes center stage, the key to success lies in adaptability and innovation. Brands that embrace these changes will not only survive but thrive in an increasingly competitive market.
