Unpacking Key Insights From E-Pack 2023

In the ever-evolving world of e-commerce, innovation and adaptation are the keys to success. E-PACK, a conference dedicated to eTail, had its 6th annual session this month with Bay Cities’ very own CEO and Chairman, Greg Tucker, invited back as a co-moderator.

This year’s themes included sustainability, a look at moments of truth, and discussions on the complex world of supply chain. With over 80 attendees, the intimate conference gave various sectors a chance for deeper connections and conversations.

Sustainability Reigns Supreme with Unboxing Still a Major Player

The corrugated box has emerged as the champion of e-commerce packaging as the emphasis on sustainability grows; A shift towards paper pouches and resealable packaging options is also on the rise. Interestingly, the apparel and electronics industries have experienced the most significant online growth, with corrugated boxes leading the way as the delivery vehicle.

A major talking point this year was around unboxing and the reminder that packaging is not just about protecting products; it's also about creating a memorable unboxing experience. The outside of a package serves as a silent salesperson, but the real party happens inside. Adding meaningful messaging within the box can help reignite the excitement of receiving a package (think about how excited you are when first placing an order. How can we continue that excitement when the package arrives?). Personalization and package versioning have gained importance in order to enhance the unboxing experience and promote sustainability.

Which leads to the next major topic of the conference: consumers’ concern over their personal environmental impact.

Consumer Behavior and Environmental Concerns

In the realm of consumer behavior, we've identified the concept of "moments of truth”: the initial attractor, the assessment of the product, and the at-home experience. However, recently, a new moment of truth has emerged: guilt. As consumers become increasingly concerned about climate change, (about 75% of people), they grapple with environmental issues and their own environmental impact. The packaging industry plays a significant role in addressing these concerns.

With only 5% of plastics currently being recycled, the industry must confront the issues of wishcycling and unsustainable practices. Utilizing and recycling corrugated boxes keeps the lifecycle of a box in motion and can lessen this feeling of guilt.

Supply Chain Complexities

The packaging supply chain, particularly in e-commerce, is a complex web of up to 20 touchpoints, demanding protective, lightweight, and sustainable packaging solutions. Reducing waste and over-packaging is essential to minimize the industry's environmental footprint: think SIOC, (Ship In Own Container), a cost-effective and efficient option for shipping. Additionally, the massive $816 billion worth of returned items in e-commerce highlights the need for sustainable solutions and clarity in the definition of sustainability.

But these weren’t the only topics that were touched on. When looking into the future, we discussed the transition from UPC codes to QR codes, set to take place in 2027. This will be an interesting game-changer, with more to come!

As a moderator and attendee of E-PACK for the past six years, the journey has been one of learning, collaboration, and exploration. The packaging industry is continuously evolving, and understanding the trends, sustainability goals, and consumer behavior is vital for staying ahead.
